In December 2022, Richard was diagnosed with bladder cancer following a series of stubborn infections. After a series of surgeries along with immunotherapy, Richard was hospitalized in August 2023 and had a radical cystectomy (bladder removal) and placement of a urostomy. As a result of this proactive surgery, Richard was also discovered to have had advanced prostate cancer and this was addressed. Just one month prior to his bladder removal, Richard defied the odds and participated in the 5k Race Away From Domestic Violence.
